You need:

1. Registration Certificate (Not Title).
2. Proof of Insurance
3. Payment of taxes and registration fees, plus any back taxes on any vehicle you own.

 

OUT OF STATE VEHICLES – NEW VEHICLES

1. Sheriff’s Inspection First
2. Original Title
3. Manufacturer’s Invoice or Affidavit of Total Consideration signed and notarized by seller and buyer.
4. Lien Papers if applicable signed by owners.
5. Signature of person to whom vehicle is to be titled must be notarized.
6. Usage Tax paid in full (Sales Tax)
7. Payment in Full
8. Transaction will take place only if owner does not have delinquent taxes on other vehicles.
9. Proof of insurance. Kentucky Policy Only

 

OUT OF STATE VEHICLES – USED VEHICLES

1. Sheriff’s Inspection First
2. Original Title
3. Affidavit of Total Consideration signed and notarized by seller and buyer.
4. Lien Papers if applicable signed by owners.
5. Signature of person to whom vehicle is to be titled must be notarized on VTR. If two names go on the title, both must be notarized.
6. If buying from individual, back of title must be signed and notarized.
7. Usage Tax paid in full. (Sales Tax)
8. Payment in Full
9. Transaction will take place only if owner does not have delinquent taxes on other vehicles.
10. If moving into Kentucky, you must show proof of usage tax paid to another state.
11. Proof of insurance – Kentucky Policy only.

 

Kentucky Vehicle Registration Renewal

You may be able to renew your registration online.

Requirements & Restrictions

Not all plates and vehicles are eligible for online renewal.

Review the following details before you start the process:

  • Vehicles registered in separate counties to the current owner must be renewed separately.
  • Leased vehicles cannot be renewed online.
  • The vehicle(s) renewed must have unexpired registration(s).
  • The owner of the vehicle(s) cannot have overdue property taxes on any other vehicles they own.
  • Vehicle(s) must be currently insured with a company that is registered with the Kentucky Department of Insurance to be eligible to renew online. If you have obtained insurance within the last 45 days, your information may not be in our database. This will prohibit you from renewing your vehicle online. Please visit your County Clerk’s office to renew.
  • The Service Members Civil Relief Act exempts certain military personnel from paying personal vehicle Ad Valorem tax. To find out if you qualify for the exemption, please contact the Property Valuation Administrator’s (PVA) office in your county of residence. Click here to find your county PVA.

Take a look at the address on your registration receipt. This must be your current address. Registration materials and renewal reminders are mailed to this address.

If your current address does not match your registration receipt, please contact your County Clerk and have it updated before you register online.
